Why Century: Spice Road.
Century: Spice Road is a hand-building game about converting spices into points, and it is one of the cleanest teaches in the hobby. Four spice cubes (turmeric, saffron, cardamom, cinnamon) form a value ladder. On your turn you either play a card from your hand, take a card from the market row, rest to pick your played cards back up, or buy a victory card by paying its spice cost. Cards produce spices, upgrade cheaper spices into pricier ones, or convert one set into another. That is the whole rules explanation, and yet the choice of which market cards to grab and how long to build before buying points gives the game real shape.
The pacing is what makes it work. Early turns are slow while you assemble a small set of cards that produce and upgrade; then there is a moment where your hand suddenly generates a fistful of cinnamon every cycle and the point cards fall quickly. The game ends when someone buys their fifth or sixth point card, and it usually finishes in thirty minutes with a tight score. Interaction is limited to racing for the same cards and the same point cards, which keeps the table relaxed.
It is the game to reach for when Splendor has been played to death and the group wants the same feeling with more variety in the engine. The Golem Edition is the same game with a fantasy coat of paint if the spice theme does not land. At five it gets a little long and the market a little random; at three or four it is at its best.
