Dead of Winter
Why Dead of Winter.
Dead of Winter is a cooperative game about a colony surviving a zombie winter, with the twist that everyone also has a secret personal objective and one of you may be a traitor. Each round the group faces a crisis that demands a pile of supplies, players send survivors out to locations to scavenge, and the colony's morale ticks down with every death and every hungry mouth. The main objective is shared, but you only win if you also complete your private goal, which might be as innocent as hoarding medicine or as damaging as wanting the colony to fail.
The crossroads cards are the reason people remember their games. At the start of a player's turn, someone reads a card with a trigger, and if the condition is met the group faces a story dilemma: a stranger at the gate, a survivor who wants to leave, a supply run that goes wrong. The choices have consequences, and they give each session a narrative that a pure resource puzzle never gets. Combined with the traitor possibility, the table talk is constant and suspicious in the best way.
It is not a light game. A full session at four or five players runs toward two hours, and the rules have edges that reward reading the book twice. It shines with a group that likes discussion and a little paranoia and will tolerate losing to bad dice. If Pandemic felt too clean and Betrayal too random, Dead of Winter sits between them: a real strategy game with a story engine bolted on.
