Finspan
The gentlest of the span games: fish descend through three ocean zones, schools form, and an hour later a reef has grown on your board.
Why Finspan.
Finspan is the entry point to the span family. Where Wingspan asks you to pay food and eggs and manage a hand, Finspan strips the cost down: most fish are played for a single resource, and the interesting part is where in the water column they go. Your board has three zones, sunlit, twilight and dark, and a fish played near the surface can dive deeper on later turns, triggering the cards it swims past. Playing fish next to each other builds schools, and schools are where the big end-of-round points come from.
The turn structure is the same four choices every round, so a new player can run their own turn after one explanation. The four-round arc is short enough that a slow start does not sink you, and the scoring is forgiving in a way that keeps kids in it. Grown-ups who know Wingspan will find fewer knife-edge decisions and more room to just build something pretty.
It plays one to five in about an hour and holds up well at two, which is rarer than it should be for games in this family. The solo automa works. The art, hundreds of real fish with a line of natural history on each card, does a lot of the heavy lifting on a family night. Buy this one first; buy Wingspan when the table asks for more.
No paid placement. No sponsorship. We chose it on merit. The Amazon link funds the lights - if you'd rather buy from a local game store, look it up on BoardGameGeek for other sellers.
Game night kit.
1-5 players, 60 min. Something to eat that will not grease the cards, something sweet for the table, and a gift idea for whoever keeps winning.
Pairings rotate with the catalog. Both sites are part of the Daily Picks Network; no affiliate link is involved in the pairing itself.
