Why Forest Shuffle.

Forest Shuffle is a card game about growing a forest, and it packs an engine builder's satisfaction into a box the size of a paperback. Every card has two halves: the whole card is a tree, but rotated it can be played as a creature or plant tucked onto the top, bottom, left, or right edge of a tree you already have. Each turn you either draw two cards (from the deck or a shared clearing of discards) or play one card by paying its cost with other cards from your hand, which go to the clearing for others to take. Trees give you slots; the animals and plants give you points, often scaled by how many trees or other creatures you have.

The design's trick is that cost and content are the same resource, so a hand full of great cards is also the money to play one of them, and choosing what to sacrifice is where the skill lives. The scoring cards chain in satisfying ways, a woodpecker that scores for every tree, a bat that scores for every insect, so a well-planned forest scores in multiples while a random one does not. Games end when the winter cards in the deck run out, and they take about 45 minutes.

It plays well at every count and is excellent at two. The theme is gentle and the art naturalistic, which suits the same players who love Wingspan, but Forest Shuffle is tighter, cheaper, and travels. If Wingspan's table space and price are the obstacle, this is the game.
