Why Lost Ruins of Arnak.

Lost Ruins of Arnak combines worker placement and deck building into a game about exploring a lost island. Each round you place archaeologists on sites to gather resources, play cards from a small deck for travel and effects, buy items and artifacts from a market, and push a research token up a temple track that rewards the earliest climbers. Discovering a new site reveals a guardian, and you either overcome it for a bonus or let it haunt your deck with a fear card. Five rounds, then scoring, and a game that reliably lands in the 60 to 90 minute range.

What makes it work is that every system feeds the others without any single one dominating. Your deck stays small, so each card you buy matters; your two workers are precious, so the sites you claim matter; and the research track is a race that punishes anyone who ignores it. New players can follow a simple plan, explore and buy artifacts, and score respectably, while experienced players find the combinations that turn a good round into a great one. The art and components sell the theme without a word of flavor text.

It plays well solo against a scripted rival, is excellent at two, and stays under two hours at four. Among the heavier-than-gateway games, it is one of the safest recommendations for a group moving up from Wingspan or Everdell, because nothing in it is mean and everything in it rewards planning. The Expedition Leaders expansion adds asymmetric characters once the base game is familiar.
