Great Western Trail
Why Great Western Trail.
Great Western Trail is a heavy game about driving cattle along a trail to Kansas City, and it manages something rare for its weight: the game always feels like it is moving. Each turn you advance your cattleman along a path of buildings, stopping at one to take its actions, until you reach the city and sell the herd in your hand. Your herd is a deck of cattle cards; better cattle sell for more, and the whole game is about improving that deck while also building your own buildings on the trail, hiring cowboys, craftsmen, and engineers, and pushing your train along a rail track that decides where you can deliver.
The rhythm is what people remember. Every trip to Kansas City is a little scoring moment, then you loop back to the start with a slightly better engine, and the buildings other players have placed along the way change your route. The three worker types pull you in three directions and you cannot afford all of them, so each game becomes a question of which lane you commit to. The second edition streamlined the rules and added a solo mode, and it is the version to own.
It is long at four players and demanding on the first play, but it is one of the most rewarding heavy euros to learn because so much of the depth is visible on the board rather than buried in card text. Groups that liked Brass and want something with a more forgiving learning curve, or Concordia players ready for more crunch, should look here. The Rails to the North expansion is excellent once the base is familiar.
