Tunnels can cost extra cards if you draw badly when you claim them. Ferries need locomotive cards. And stations let you borrow a rival's route to complete a ticket, which softens the brutal blocking that the original map is known for.

Those additions do two useful things. They make the game a little more forgiving for a family table, since being cut off is no longer a disaster, and they give experienced players a few more decisions than the original's pure race. The map itself is denser in the middle and more interesting to plan around, and the long routes across the continent reward ambitious play. Games still finish in under an hour and the teach is still five minutes.

It is the Ticket to Ride to buy if you own none, and worth owning alongside the original if the family plays often, because the feel is different enough to matter.
